Sting like a Bee
Sting like a Bee
In the 1930’s and 1940’s Harlem was a hub for critical thinking, creativity, and activism. Jazz culture thrived, swing was the rage, and fashion made a bold statement.
The youth of Harlem took to both music and fashion as a form of expression. Wearing a zoot suit was seen as a declaration of pride and an embrace of the freedom found in self-expression.
Even though the style spread, it was never available in department stores. To have one, it required a tailor or someone skilled in sewing to make. Unfortunately, vintage Zoot Suits are now hard to find due to a 1940's ban on wearing them and the outcome of the Zoot Suit Riots, where the garments were torn off those who wore them.
Sting like a Bee, with its colorful and eye-catching yellow polka dots, revives the bold, energetic creativity of the post-depression and wartime fashion. This level of fashion is all about freedom and screaming it out loud.
